Cardboard boxes – how many types are there?

Cardboard boxes are the “bread and butter” of the packaging industry. From storing things we don’t need on a regular basis to transporting items from one location to another and packing the various products we buy online and offline, cardboard boxes are used to make our lives more enjoyable.

In this article, we tell you about the main types of cardboard boxes.

What exactly are these boxes made of?

Most of the boxes we encounter in our daily lives are made of corrugated cardboard. It is available in a variety of paper weights and finishes.

In its basic form, corrugated cardboard is obtained from a piece of grooved or corrugated paper placed between two smooth pieces of paper.

How many types of boxes are there?

Depending on how they are made, there are three types of boxes:

  • with a single “wall” – a layer of corrugated board is interposed between two sheets of lining boards. These boxes protect packaged products, using outer and inner liners reinforced by grooves specially designed for increased strength;
  • with two “walls” – two layers of grooves glued to three layers of lining board. Because they incorporate two rows of specialized grooves, these boxes are ideal for transporting and storing heavy or bulky products;
  • with three “walls” – three layers of grooves are laminated with four lining plates. These are the most durable types of boxes.

Depending on how the boxes are closed, the most common are:

  • self-forming boxes – are made of a single piece of cardboard. Reliable and durable due to the bending of the walls, self-forming boxes are the easiest to assemble and are recommended in particular when packaging with dimensions up to 2000 mm is required;
  • boxes closed by stapling – as the name suggests, closing is done by stapling. Stapling is done with wire, giving boxes increased resistance because it allows the adhesion of all the layers from which the boxes are made of;
  • boxes closed by glueing – this method has the advantage of the pleasant appearance given to the boxes and is used mainly for those who support weights up to 40 kilograms.

Based on their purpose, boxes are split as follows:

  1. Transport boxes

Made of corrugated cardboard, most often with 3, 5 or 7 corrugated, these boxes meet the conditions necessary for the safe transport of various products over short, medium and long distances. Transport boxes can be reused or recycled, which helps to protect the environment.

  1. Archiving boxes

Archiving boxes are the solution by which the most important documents can be stored and archived securely for any period.

The cardboard these boxes are made of is generally one with 3 or 5 corrugations. Archiving boxes are available in various sizes and colours, can be personalized with the messages, logos or images desired by customers.

  1. Storage boxes

Made of 3, 5 or 7-layer corrugated cardboard, the storage boxes are resistant to wear, damage and the weights they store. They are used by individuals and transport companies, those operating in the industrial field and those producing consumer goods.

  1. Collector boxes

The collector boxes allow the transport and storage of several boxes by overlapping. Available in a wide range of sizes, these boxes help save space. The solutions offered by this type of box reduce the cost of transport and storage.
